Ralph Metcalfe, a four-time Olympic medalist and a world-record sprinter, accepted in September 1936, a job offer from Xavier after competing in the Berlin Olympics the previous month. At the time, Xavier was in its 12th year and still forging its path to sustained success.
Metcalfe became Xavier's coach of men's track and field. He recruited and coached athletes who won championships at the Penn Relays, the Drake Relays and the AAU national meet. One of those athletes, Herb Douglas, won bronze in the long jump at the 1948 London Olympics. He then became one of the first African-Americans to ascend to a corporate vice presidency.
A year before Metcalfe's arrival at Xavier, coaching brothers Ted and Giles Wright jump-started a men's basketball program. They won 87 percent of their games in six seasons (1935-41), capped by a 29-0 record. This was the last time a Louisiana men's basketball team was unbeaten.
Xavier's thirty-six 20-win seasons are the most in the history of Louisiana men's college basketball.
It's not all about the good old days. In the last 25 years, Xavier won 131 team championships at the national, conference and regional levels. Competitive cheer won the NAIA national title in 2022 and an NCA national title in 2024. Seth Alexander won NAIA men's triple jump titles in 2023 and 2024. The women's tennis doubles team of Mbali Langa and McKenna Wheatley in 2024 won the Gold Nuggets' fifth NAIA title at the ITA Cup Championships. Men's tennis is a three-time NAIA national runner-up and has been ranked in every top-25 coaches poll since April 2007.
Sport offerings will grow to 16 in August 2025 with the launch of men's and women's rowing.
Our campus Convocation Center, with seating for nearly 4,000 and the venue for home competitions in basketball, volleyball and cheer, is routinely cited as one of the best facilities outside of NCAA Division I.
Graduates of Xavier Athletics have produced stellar careers in medicine, research, coaching, education, business, the arts and media.

I believe in the power of giving back to my alma mater because I understand the challenges HBCU students face in navigating the intersection of science and business.
